What Separates a Successful Sod Installation from a Failed One
Sod installation failures in Raleigh Hills, OR almost universally trace back to one of three causes: inadequate soil preparation, improper sod selection for site conditions, or insufficient establishment watering in the weeks following installation. Kelly Landscaping's sod installation process is designed to eliminate all three failure modes through systematic preparation, regionally appropriate product sourcing, and detailed post-installation care guidance. Our installation crews have placed tens of thousands of square feet of sod across Raleigh Hills, OR properties and understand the site-specific variables that determine whether new turf establishes successfully or struggles through its first season.
Ground preparation is the most critical phase of any sod installation project and the phase most commonly skipped or rushed by less experienced contractors. Our preparation process begins with soil testing to determine pH, compaction levels, and nutrient status. We then rototill the installation area to a depth of four to six inches, incorporate any needed soil amendments based on test results, establish correct grades for drainage away from structures, and firm the surface to eliminate air pockets before the first roll of sod is placed. This preparation investment directly determines the quality of root-to-soil contact that drives successful establishment.
We source sod exclusively from regional farms that grow varieties proven to perform in the Raleigh Hills, OR climate zone. Farm-fresh sod is delivered to the job site and installed on the same day to prevent moisture loss and turf stress. Our crews lay sod in a staggered brick pattern with seams butted tightly together, eliminating the gaps and ridges that create mowing challenges and visible lines as the lawn matures. After installation, we apply a starter fertilizer formulated specifically for new sod establishment and provide clients with a written watering schedule calibrated to the time of year and local rainfall expectations.
